Xi Jinping’s Congratulatory Message to the 22th UNWTO General Assembly

CHENGDU, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) The 22th UNWTO General Assembly was opened in Chengdu, Sichuan, on September 13. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the assembly.

Xi Jinping noted tourism is an important channel of communication for different countries and cultures to draw on each other’s strengths, a viable way to grow the economy and increase employment, and a vital industry to uplift people’s living standards.

Xi Jinping stressed China puts a high premium on the development of tourism which registers a rate higher than 10% regarding its overall contribution to China’s economy and employment. In the next five years, it is expected that 700 million Chinese people will travel abroad. Here in China, we have a long history, splendid culture, spectacular scenery and rich folk customs. We warmly welcome the tourists from around the world to come here for sightseeing or just to wind down. The UNWTO plays a significant role in promoting the global tourism development and strengthening international tourism communication and cooperation. It is hoped this assembly will facilitate all countries to jointly push the global tourism forward.
