Guizhou

Known as "Qian" for short, Guizhou lies on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in southwestern China, covering an area of 170,000 square kilometers. Its terrain descends from west to east, widely scattered with limstone and Danxia landforms. The abundant underground rivers contribute to the unique natural resources of the province. Characterized by the various limestone landscapes, Danxia landforms, highland dammed lakes, crisscrossed rivers, fossils of ancient lives, rafting tourism, hot springs, Buddhist shrines, cave coffins, stone carvings, mural paintings, ancient architecture, and folk customs, the colorful natural and cultural tourism recources present an enchanting picture for Guizhou. At present, there are more than 120 scenic sites open to the public, famous of which are eight state-class scenic resorts, namely Huangguoshu Waterfall, Dragon Palae, Zhijin Cave, Red Maple Lake, Yanghe River, Libo Zhangjiang, Maling River Gorge, and Chishui River; seven national nature reserves, namely Fanjing Mountain, Molan Karst Primitive Forest, Chishui Primeval Forest, Weining Grass Lake, Xishui Broadleaf Forest, Leigong Mountain, and Mayanghe Francois'Leaf Monkey Reserve in Yanghe.

Situated at the confluence of Jiangkou, Yinjiang and Songtao Counties, Fanjing Mountain is a national nature reserve, with a total area of 567 sq km. It enjoys a reputation of being the "Ecological Kingdom", and the plant and animal gene database. Of all the animals and plants under state protection, dove trees, henry emmenopterys, Chinese tuliptree, Guizhou golden- hair monkeys and doll fish are the most representative. In the scenic zone, tourist can appreciate the green peaks rising one higher than another, hanging waterfalls, crisscrossed streams and forests with a coverage rate of 95 percent; hence it is the only place with the best-preserved protophytes at the same latitude in the world. Fanjing Mountain is a Buddhist sacred place where the rites to pay homage to Maitreya (Future Buddha) is held regulary, and other tourist attractions include the four imperial nunneries, 48 Great Enlightenment nunneries, and Huguo and Zhengguo Buddhist temples.

The Huangguoshu Waterfall is a state-class scenic resort, located 47 kilometers south of Anshun City and 137 kilometers from Guiyang City. Cascading into the Rhinoceros Pool on the White Water River, the waterfall is 74 meters high and 81 meters wide, displaying a spectacular view. Huangguoshu and the nearby 10-plus smaller waterfalls, all formed in the typical subtropical karst area, compose an attractive complex of waterfall. The Tianxing Scenic Zone, an important part of the Huangguoshu Scenic Resort, lies 6,000 meters from the Huangguoshu Waterfall, encomposing the Tianxing Miniature Landscapes, Tianxing Cave and Yinlian Zhuitan Waterfall.

Also dubbed as Valentines's Day of the Miao, the festival is observed by the Miao people each year from the 14th to the 16th day of the third lunar month. During the festival, young women would invite their lovers to have "Sister Meal" together, go outing, tread on drums, sing in antiphonal sytle, exchange gifts, and even decide their betrohals. A genuine reflection of people's romance life in the transition period from materiarchal to patrilineal society, this festival is dubbed as a "Festival Hidden in Flowers" and "The Oldest Valentine's Day of the Orient".
